Google Gives Firefox A Boost With Home Page Ad
Google Inc. on Wednesday (Apr
26) ran an ad for Firefox on its popular homepage, giving the open-source
Web browser a big marketing boost over their joint rival Microsoft Corp.
The ad promoted the key advantage supporters claim Firefox has over
Microsoft's Internet Explorer -- security. IE, which has more than 85
percent of the market, is a favorite target for hackers and virus writers.
The one-line text ad read, "Firefox with Google Toolbar: tabbed browsing,
safer surfing," and included a picture of the toolbar on Firefox. Only
people using IE could see the ad.
Gamer Reaction: Nintendo Might Have a Wii Problem
Nintendo's announcement on
Thursday that its next-generation game console -- formerly codenamed
"Revolution" -- is officially named "Wii" has received mixed reactions from
industry watchers and gamers alike.
Unfortunately, while some have expressed positive feelings about the new
name, the vast majority of reactions have been decidedly negative, ranging
from simple disbelief to outright disgust.
From industry watchers to the Nintendo faithful, all have something to say
about Wii, which is pronounced "we." And in that respect, perhaps Nintendo
already has attained its stated goal of fostering a sense of community with
the new name.

AOL to Offer AIM Users Free Phone Numbers
AOL is set to offer its instant-messaging users a free phone number to use for incoming calls, and for a fee, the ability to call regular phones from the software.
The move brings AOL Instant Messenger, or AIM, closer in functionality to voice-oriented applications like eBay Inc.'s Skype and so-called voice over Internet services from Vonage Holdings Corp. and others.
Skype last week reached 100 million registered users. AOL has 80 million registered users of AIM and ICQ, a similar program.
AIM began a decade ago as a text-based chat program and gradually added voice and video communication tools. But without the ability to connect to the regular telephone network, AIM users were largely limited to conducting voice chats with one another.
