» Acer Aspire 2920 and the Ferrari 1110

Acer Announced two new ultra-portable notebooks, the Aspire 2920 and the Ferrari 1110; the former an Intel powered system, the latter AMD. Both systems seem to benefit from Acer's recent shift to a more design orientated focus, with plenty of pleasing lines and curvaceous...curves.

Looking at the Aspire 2920, it's the first 12.1in notebook to use Acer's new Gemstone design theme. Under the hood there will be a selection of Santa Rosa spec Core 2 Duos, with up to 2GB 667MHz DRR2 RAM in support. Graphics will be supplied by Intel's GMA X3100 integrated solution, while Acer continues its partnership with Dolby by including the Dolby Home Theatre suite as well. As is typical the 12.1in display will support resolutions up to 1,280 x 800, while Draft N Wi-Fi will be available on selected models. With hard drive options running up to 250GB, storage shouldn't be a problem either, though Acer made no mention of the possibility of SSD equipped models and, given Acer's value orientated focus, it seems unlikely at this time.

Launching in the second half of October there's no word on pricing just yet but, if the 2920 is anything like its larger cousin, the Aspire 5920, then it's likely to be priced competitively.

Continuing Acer's partnership with Ferrari, the Ferrari 1100 is a new design that's laden with lots carbon fibre, red highlights and the famous Prancing Horse logo of the Maranello based company. It's a good looking machine, which makes it all the more disappointing that Acer reps managed to forget to provide any photography of it - doh! Instead you'll have to enjoy this shot above, and we'll harass Acer for some decent shots just as soon as we can accost a PR man/woman and relay our thoughts.

Another disappointment, no doubt due to its association with Ferrari's Formula One team, is the system is AMD powered which, given Intel's domination of the market both in terms of sales and performance, is a major handicap. This may be tough on AMD, but right now its mobile options are simply not up to scratch.

Putting these feelings aside, CPU options start with the 1.60GHz Turion 64 X2 TL-58 and run up to 2.3GHz TL-66. Based on the AMD M690T chipset Draft N Wi-Fi is included as standard, while there's 2GB 667MHz DDR2 RAM (upgradeable to 4GB) to help power all those memory hungry applications. A key feature is the display, which is a 12.1in, 1,280 x 800 panel and features white LED backlighting. Though not the lightest at just under 2kg with a 6-cell battery, it's still perfectly portable and Acer claim up to four hours battery life from a single charge - claim being the operative word there.

Again there's no word on pricing, though given the Ferrari association expect to pay a bit of premium.
